A Quest for Caviar and Lobster!

This ladies and gentleman, is the tale of the Lobster and Caviar burger from Wendy's. A burger which as far as i know only exists in the recently opened establishment in Roppongi, Tokyo. So as I happen to be in Tokyo at the moment, I figured what a fine opportunity to give this burger a taste test and tell all you loverly people how it went.

I left this afternoon from the monthly apartment where Im staying in Akebonobashi near Shinjuku and caught the train to Roppongi. Now I had read online that this new Wendy's was open near the Roppongi Hills Complex. So on my arrival I went straight towards Roppongi Hills in search of Wendy's. Now for those who don't know, Roppongi Hills turned out to be a massive, 3/4 mutli-storey building, shopping mall complex, with dozens of shops, restaurants, a garden/small park, the tv asahi studio and even its own gym and spas. I spent around about an hour, getting hungrier and hungrier, looking for this Wendy's. I couldn't use my phone to look up its true location, as it's a British phone, but I quickly gave it a true and accessed the map on my phone to try to find where it might be...No luck... I search hundreds of maps and signs and wandered around the entire Roppongi Hills Complex with no luck. I was even tempted to give up and just have lunch at the McDonalds or the 4/5 Starbucks' dotted around, but no I kept my resolve and pushed on.

A Night in with La Mulana

Title: La Mulana
Developer: Nigoro
Platform: PC

Metroidvania games have been lacking a little in recent years so it's with great honour that I present to you, La Mulana! Originally a game released in 2005 a recent 2012 remake has brought it once again into the lime light. If you enjoy games that have a load of puzzles and a whole lot of platforming in them (and occasionally you'll cry from how much you die) you'll enjoy this one. Collect gold and treasures to progress and ultimately unlock the secrets of La Mulana. If you want to know how to be terrible at this game then you should probably watch the video below.

The game is available now on Playism ( http://www.playism-games.com/games/lamulana/) for US$14.99.

"Why am I so terrible at video games?"

Kickstarter: Virtual Reality is Here

Kickstarter has had both positive and negative stories in the past year, but here's a story that might amaze you and get you excited for the future of gaming.

I'd rather have a holodeck, but I'll take it.

I introduce to you the Oculus Rift, the concept is: a gaming headset that allows you a whole new level of immersion into your game worlds. Mananging to rake in a total of nearly $900,000 in just one day of being up as a Kickstarter - with a lot more money to come in the next 29 days.

A Night in with Awesomenauts

Title: Awesomenauts
Developer: Ronimo Games
Platform: PC

If you enjoy MOBA/ARTS games at all then you might enjoy this little 2D version. The basics are the same: two bases, destroy turrets, push creeps and destroy their base. It's just as intense but not as complex and easier to grasp - definitely not a replacement but a more relaxed affair if you're tired of being shouted down by your teammates in your favourite MOBA/ARTS. It's a nice little 3-on-3 affair and I highly recommend it for some good, clean, team gaming.

The game is available now on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/204300/) for $9.99 / £6.99 / €9.99.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Goes F2P

Gamespot has let loose with some information about the latest MMO Giant to turn to the Dark Side (known as Free-2-Play, although that in itself is debatable).

Sad times for everyone involved I'm sure, it's just not been performing well enough under it's pay-monthly subscription scheme and is now being forced to include a free-to-play system. All past subscribers will be credited with premium currency depending on: if you bought the Collector's Edition AND the number of months you subscribed for (more details here).

S.W.Tortanic is sinking.

I really wanted this game to succeed, I bought this game on launch and I even played solidly for a month. There was nothing to keep me hooked, the story was pretty much the only hook. The gameplay was dated and basically the exact same as World Of Warcraft.

A Night in with Rusty Hearts

Title: Rusty Hearts
Developer: Stairway Games
Platform: PC

Rusty Hearts is an online side-scrolling beat-'em-up and fully co-op-able with a bunch of friends. Now downloadable on Steam and totally Free-2-Play.

This video is a year old so it's probably very different now. New characters and such. We'll update this at some point.

"Devil May Cry but with friends and online!"

Top 5 Silent Hill Monsters

Just a bit of fun in the wake of the excitement for the upcoming movie this October. I will be reflecting on the series and the grotesque beasts that have spawned forth from the twisted minds behind the games.

SPOILERS, ahoy. If you've not really played the Silent Hill games then I suggest you go play them and enjoy them, then we'll all be on the same page.

Silent Hill: Sean Bean Can't Survive Again

Title: Silent Hill: Revelations 3D
Director: Michael J. Bassett
Release Date: 26th Oct (US), 31st Oct (UK)

As a long term follower of the Silent Hill video game series I thoroughly enjoyed the 2006 movie directed by Christophe Gans. Not necessarily revelling in its artistic decisions to deviate from the original source but enjoying the visual experience of the movie and how it captures all the elements that I feel makes up Silent Hill.

Someone has really good artistic skills when it comes to leaving threatening messages written in blood.

So here we are again, hype and expectations for the second instalment are definitely at a high. Provided they can deliver a similar experience to the first movie, it can't go wrong. Here's where my concerns start, the writer has changed as has the director. Not a good start.

Krazy Korean Film: The Chaser

No doubt that all of you, like me, have seen their fair share of crazy non-sensical Asian films, from killer hair extensions to mutated fish and meatball machines. But every so often you stumble across a little gem. This film is that little gem. In my opinion one of the best Korean films since Old Boy.

Directed by Hong-jin Na and starring Yeong-hie Seo, Yun-seok Kim and Jung-woo Ha. Joong-ho is a dirty ex-cop who became a pimp who, due to having several of his girls go missing, is in major financial trouble. He discovers that all the girls who disappeared were requested by the same guy with whom one of his girls is  meeting with right now! Soon the race is on!

Facebook Presents: Space Pokémon (Outernauts)

Farmville, Cityville and Villeville. Social games don't have a good reputation and with good reason. Many of them don't extend beyond basic clones of Tetris or Bejewelled and they never really have depth to them. The ones that are a bit more extensive end up caught in the web of "you must invite x number of friends to proceed". Here is the latest game in the Facebook world.

Outernauts is a Facebook game designed by Insomniac Games, creators of the Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance.

This all seems familiar...

The game follows a simple system: befriend space monsters, then use them to fight and capture more space monsters. Sounding familiar? There will also be other space monster trainers - other Outernauts to compete against. Yeah, okay, it's Pokémon in space.

Complete with evolution, 4 moves per monster and double battling. Even the battle transition is scarily similar. But none of these things are a bad thing and I'm certainly not about to call "cheap-knock-off", it definitely is a tribute and is tastefully done and well fleshed out. Pokémon fans will be pleased to play this while they wait for the next installment of their beloved franchise.

Movie Talk: The Dark Knight Rises

They should rename it "Why the hell can't I hear anyone speak?: The Movie" and who gave Deckard Cain (of Diablo fame) a role in this movie? Does Chris Nolan finish his trilogy story with the intended bang or does  The Dark Knight fail to get a rise? Minor spoilers to follow.

As a huge Batman fan and a big fan of Nolan's Batman movies I had high hopes for this movie but I went in open minded. One theme that definitely continues from the previous movies is the idea of 'escalation' - everything in this movie is bigger and more impressive than the last.

Movie Talk: Amazing, Fantastical, Splendiferous Spider-Man

Let's cut to the chase. Did the movie live up to the hype? With three movies already under Spidey's belt in the form of the Maguire Trilogy, did Garfield leave his mark so that we might be blessed(/cursed) with another updated trilogy? Or are we reeling from another terrible Spider-Man 3 and force to shake our fists at the screen while doing our best Jon Arbuckle impression?

No major spoilers but beware if you're particularly sensitive to minor plot discussion, don't read - just go watch it.

Don't be so glum, Pete. All teenagers go through this phase.

Summer is Over

It's been a harrowing 10 days. I stapled my wallet shut just so that I wouldn't use it to buy every single cheap game that I saw in the Steam deals.

It didn't last long and I ended up picking up:

- Just Cause 2. Fun, sandbox game where you can parachute-grappling hook combo yourself as a means of transportation. Also a multiplayer mod is in beta currently so that's worth a look.

- The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. collection. Atmospheric, opressive, post-nuclear disaster survival simulator. GET OUT OF HERE, STALKER. Seriously good FPS series.

- Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. Metroidvania title with co-op. Speaks for itself.

- Evochron Mercenary. Space Pirate/Adventurer Sim. It's like Microsoft's Flight Sim combined with EVE Online... but Offline. Has co-op too.

- Arma 2. All for the mod: Day Z.

[Updated] Final Fantasy Versus Finally Confirmed Dead?

Originally intended to be a group of games involving the games we now know as Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy Versus has now rumoured to be finally canned.

Many fans will have already given up on the title after numerous no-shows at big industry events and a whole six years since it was announced and all we have is a trailer, some gameplay and some screenshots. You'd think after six years there would be at least a demo of sorts.

Nowadays Square Enix are always the butt of jokes about long development cycles and sub-par RPG games. Seems like we're relying on their Eidos side to provide the goods - probably the best investment Square Enix have made in a long time: looking forward to Hitman Absolution and the new Tomb Raider origins game.

The Co-Op Night #1

Blacklight: Retribution
Developer: Zombie Studios
Platform: PC

As someone who plays games a lot, I find the experience is enhanced 100-fold when you can play a game with one or more friends (it also helps if the game itself is good). So in these articles I'll be bringing you co-op games that I have enjoyed with my fellow gamers and introducing you to them.

Such a magnificent beast.

Today we'll be looking at Blacklight: Retribution (also known as BLR). A first-person shooter developed by Zombie Studios and recently made it's debut as a free-2-play game on Steam. Expect cash shops and a lot of negative attitudes, but a generally good game with high production values - most of all: fun!

Movie Talk (John Carter)

Title: John Carter
Theatre Release date: 9th March 2012
Home Media Release date: 5th June 2012

At first glance you see this movie and you'll think, "Epic! Aliens and sword-fighting! It must be good!". However, movies these days have a bad habit of showing all the good parts in their trailers.

This movie is not worth your hard-earned money for a cinema visit but I would recommend you give it a chance on home media or even through legal streaming media - this is especially true if you have children. This movie has a lot of colourful characters and good amount of action,it won't bore you but, essentially, the movie is a Disney live-action movie. Expect it to be child-friendly and avoid if Disney is not to your liking.

Google - Can You See What I See?

I've always been a bit of a technophile, being obsessed and excited about the direction of the industry and this new bit of technology being developed by Google is no different. Bringing us an "augmented reality head mounted display" edging us further into the realms of science-fiction.
Is he looking into the future?
(Credit: Stephen Shankland/CNET)
This is the dream: augmented reality. Currently we have voice recognition working in unison with all the other Google commodities we've grown accustomed to, complete with video camera - all rolled into a little lens unit.

Scott Pilgrim... The Collectors Edition~

Have you guys heard of a little known thing called 'Scott Pilgrim?!'
Well, I bring to you a little bit of interesting news~

But first for those who don't know about the series. Scott Pilgrim was originally a series of graphic stories by Bryan Lee O'Malley.

Scott Pilgrim is a series of books spanning from 1-6 volumes from the years 2004 -2010. The graphic stories depict the life of 23 year old Scott Pilgrim, his love life and his band. (I won't go too much into it as I'm sure you all know what happens!) After the 6th and final installment of the books in 2010, it spawned many things- A hollywood movie (2010), A short Animation, A game (2010) and countless merch.

Without sounding TOO hipster (I totally was into the comic books before everyone else) I've loved the comics ever since I was introduced to them, and was kinda dreading the Hollywood movie (Michael Cera playing the lead?! Wasn't something I could picture well).

So any news about something knew to do with the series is a tad bitter sweet to me. I'm now getting the sense its being OVER done. How much longer can you milk this series?

The author Bryan Lee O'Malley announced today via his Twitter and tumblr, that he'll be releasing a Collectors Edition of Volume 1 of the series!...So! Am I excited?!
.....Not really!

Once Again Guilds At War

Title: Guild Wars 2

Release Date: 28th August 2012

Written by: Covalency

Guild Wars 2 is an interesting one to be sure, it follows many of the conventions of an MMO but where it breaks them is where it really shines. Skipping right to the inevitable comments: yes, it's awesome no doubt about that, but no it won't kill World of Warcraft - Blizzard are doing a fine job of that themselves.

You have to wonder why is it only now we're getting features like these when many of them have been common complaints in the genre and gaming for so many years.

Diablo 3 Challenge - What Did I Get Myself Into?

Day 1 - ... When does the money start rolling in?

Total Earned: £0.00

You remember the challenge? Earn back the money spent on buying the game within the space of 14 days. Hack, slash and magic my way to that magic £40.

That's what I told myself, but then I bought Diablo 3 anyway.

My first thoughts were "this is gonna be easy" just play the game till rare loot drops then sell it all for minimum profit, rinse and repeat till you make it all back, right? WRONG. You can't just sell anything and expect to get a sale, for real money, straight away. At this stage in the game the gamers willing to part with cash are very particular.

An Idiot's Guide to Earning Back your Diablo 3 Money

Diablo and it's clones are games that have always been close to my heart.

Dubbed either "dungeon crawler" or "hack 'n slash", if there's one thing I know that's important to a Diablo game is the loot.

The pang of raw excitement you feel when a monster bursts with loot and you frantically scroll through the items to see if you see that tell-tale coloured hue of glorious rare loot.

Which brings me to the latest installment, Diablo 3, the newest of the game that kickstarted a loot craze all across the world.

As unrealistic as it might be I came up with a crazy challenge as soon as I heard the Real Money Auction House had opened up, allowing us to earn and spend real money in the world of Diablo 3.

My proposed project is simple: play Diablo 3 for 2 weeks, chronicling my adventures as I go along, all with the sole purpose of utilising the Real Money Auction House to earn back the money I have lost in acquiring the game itself.

It's fun to play co-op games together, right? Builds friendships while breaking them down. This is a confusing concept but when you play the following game you'll understand. Missed PART 1? Go check that out!

Trine 2 (PC/Xbox360/PS3)
Needless to say we promptly walked in the opposite direction.

The Online Co-Op List - Part 1

Ever had the problem of having a set of computers available but with no games to play on them? First world problems, I know. But that's another blog post altogether.

I mean sure there are the giants that everyone has played at some point during their online multiplayer lives: Team Fortress 2, Minecraft, etc, but sometimes we crave something deeper and sometimes a bit more story-driven.

I've compiled a list of games that I highly recommend for multiplayer co-operative play with your friends since it was so hard to find anything comprehensive on the internet. (This is written purely from a stand-point of PC gaming but many of these games are multiplatform).

These are all Pay-To-Play, no ongoing subscriptions but you have to buy the game obviously - "Hey, sometimes you gotta fork out the wonga for fun".

Dungeon Defenders (1-4 Players, PC/Xbox360/PS3)

Who brings a lightsaber to a medieval reenactment, seriously?

What else you got, Nintendo?!

2012 is going to be good for the 3DS with so many first-party giants on the move: Paper Mario, New Super Mario Bros 2 and for all Pokemon fans you get an new and improved Pokedex and a Dream Radar available through the eShop, both of which can be used in the new and improved Pokemon Black & White 2.

So what else do they have on the way?

An Evening With The 3DS - Part 2

What else did we see from Nintendo's exclusive hour of 3DS magic?

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

We've had far too much coverage of this game, several trailers with one in particular spanning nearly 10 minutes. As a long term fan of the series I'm constantly left wondering "when are we getting Kingdom Hearts 3?" A sequel to Kingdom Hearts 2 and inspired with the new knowledge we learned from Birth by Sleep, the adventure follows Sora and Riku as they do some other nonsensical quest where we meet Disney characters along the way.

An Evening With The 3DS - Part 1

At their E3 press conference, Nintendo promised they'd be showing off a lot more titles in this specially planned hour dedicated to everyone's new favourite portable: the 3DS. Did they show us everything we wanted and more? Let's see what was offered!

E3 2012 Day 2 Nintendo Conference

If you came to the Nintendo conference expecting the announcement for new games, I'm afraid you'll have to wait till a separate reveal tomorrow. What they did show was definitely nothing unexpected and the distinct lack of third-party titles made me a little sad.

Pikmin 3

The previous installment came out in 2004 so a sequel has been a long time coming. New Pikmin types and a tease about 4 new characters. I can only assume that they will all be simultaneously working together to solve maps, allowing other players to drop-in and drop-out using the second WiiU gamepad or any of the other Wii controllers.

Guest Post: My E3 Round Up

So the first day of E3 is all wrapped up, I managed to get some sleep, and here I am now, writing up what the first day brought us in terms of expectations and disappointments. Day 1 was full of the big hitters minus Nintendo.

By far the most talked about and the most hyped (after the presentation) was Watch Dogs! This came out of the left field didn’t it?!

E3 2012 Round 4 Sony

I've always favoured the original Playstation logo honestly.

Sony, the big hitter, you'd expect them to come up with a lot of nice titles to wow us with seeing as they're something of a powerhouse in the industry - although not financially if you've been following the latest news. It's been an interesting conference...

E3 2012 Round 3 Ubisoft

Ubisoft have delivered some nice content this year, including a deliciously well-kept secret. But I think I'm not alone in being excited about hearing more WiiU news.

There are some big hitters in the Ubisoft corner (Assassin's Creed) but a lot of titles surprised me when they were showcased.

E3 2012 Round 2 EA Conference

Madden again? EA Sports, indeed.

A strong delivery from EA, really kicked E3 up a notch by hitting us with a multitude of games - something I felt was lacking in the Microsoft conference, instead opting to give us more Kinect nonsense.

Honestly who actually uses voice commands over the controller? That's a unique brand of laziness.
